I notice that the classes are offered at both graduate and undergraduate level, which should I take?
You would take the classes at graduate level if you do NOT currently have a graduate degree and see obtaining one in the next seven years as part of your life/career plan. Otherwise, undergraduate is fine. You can earn the certificates of completion at either level. You can ONLY count the courses toward a graduate degree if you take them at graduate level, you cannot come back to us after a class is completed and ask to have the level changed.

How long does it usually take to complete a certificate T&D?
The average student in the T&D program takes approximately 18-24 months to complete a certificate, taking one class per term. It is possible to complete a certificate in one year. The program is quite flexible.

When and where are the classes held?
The classes are held in the evenings, after 6:30pm on weekdays and on Saturdays all day. About two-thirds of the courses have online components that may cut down on class meetings. The Methods and Models for Intercultural Training course will be held as a three-day intensive class (Wednesday-Friday, 8:30am-5pm) in July every year, when we join the Summer Institute for Intercultural Communications.

Most of the classes are offered on the main PSU campus. The Principles of Training and Development and the Contemporary Issues courses are held at the Intercultural Communications Institute, just off SW Canyon Road in Portland; and the Summer Institute for Intercultural Communications takes place on the campus of Reed College.

When and where do I find the T&D courses; I note that they are NOT on the main PSU Web or print catalog?
The T&D series is a self-supporting program of the Graduate School of Education and usually publishes its classes separately in the Continuing Education catalog, web page, and in the T&D brochure. We recommend you bookmark the T&D program web page at: www.ceed.pdx.edu/t_and_d and then click on 'Current Courses' for the most up to date logistical information.

We usually publish our classes approximately six weeks before each term. Often the full year's schedule is available by the end of the summer, but the actual course numbers and the ability to register go on-line six weeks before the start of the term.

What about textbooks and materials?
There are always textbooks in all of the T&D courses and we cannot project these costs. We recommend students be prepared to spend $100 per class on average for texts. Some classes have materials fees built into them to cover copyright cleared readings and/or assessment instruments—but there are always texts on top of these materials charges.

What are the tuition and fees?
The T&D program charges tuition and fees at the same rates as the main university. However, because these are self-supporting courses, the tuition and fees do not scale the same way as regular university tuition and fees. The T&D program manager can have your fees adjusted if you are taking more than one class per term and are admitted to a graduate program of study at PSU. Please send your requests via e-mail to: plato@pdx.edu.
We can only quote you this year's tuition; the university sets it's tuition every year—late spring to early summer—for the next year and as a rule there is little raise at the undergrad level—but graduate tuition has been going up at five-to-seven percent per year.
The tuition outlined below is for fall 2008 to spring 2009. Both undergraduate and graduate levels are listed and materials fees are included. Everyone completes the CORE curriculum of three courses, plus two specialty courses to earn a certificate of completion—please consult our web page for these details: www.ceed.pdx.edu/t_and_d.

CORE Tuition
Undergrad. = $1556
Grad. = $3333

Management
Undergrad. = $854
Grad. = $1916

Intercultural Training (07-08 fees—subject to change)
Undergrad. = $1581.50
Grad. = $2167.50

Training (classroom)
Undergrad. = $854
Grad. = $1916

Online-Based Training
Undergrad. = $979
Grad. = $2215

I am an admitted graduate student and note that the tuition does not scale the same way the rest of my classes' tuition adds up, can you fix that?
Yes, please contact the program manager at plato@pdx.edu and she can have the tuition of admitted graduate students taking more than one class per term adjusted to the university's scaled levels of tuition.

What if I am a graduate assistant at the university and do NOT pay tuition?
Please contact the T&D Program manager at plato@pdx.edu and she will make arrangements to have the tuition removed from your account. The fees for the classes cannot be removed and must be paid by the student.
Also, please note that taking self-support classes as part of your graduate assistant course load will reduce your stipend by the proportional amount of self-support credits in your load (e.g. 3 credits in self-support of 9 credits full-time load = 1/3, so the reduction is 1/3 of your stipend).

I note that the Summer Intercultural Class' tuition is different from the other classes, why is that and how does it work?
The Summer Methods and Models of Intercultural Training class is offered in cooperation with the Intercultural Communications Institute, so the tuition and fees are paid directly to the Institute and NOT to PSU. In this setting there can be no scaling or waiving of tuition for admitted graduate students or teaching assistants. You also cannot apply financial aid for this course.
