Library Media Licensure General Information

Library Media Licensure: Obtain your license to become a K-12 library media specialist. This license does not allow you to become a classroom teacher, but it does allow you to work in a public school media center.

Practical experience: Apply classroom ideas to actual field practice through an individualized student teaching plan at two levels (elementary, middle, and secondary).

Experienced instructors: Learn from qualified school personnel and Portland State University faculty currently implementing and studying aspects emphasized in the program.

Collegial environment: Network and support one another more effectively by participating with colleagues throughout the entire program in an educational community.

Distance delivery: For the partially online courses in the library media portion of the program, decide when to study and interact with your professors and classmates—days, evenings, or weekends—anywhere there's a personal computer and an Internet connection.

Part-time program: Participants in the library media licensure program are able to go through this program part time until their student teaching experiences.

Seven quarters: The 59 credits are designed to be completed in seven quarters. (example: fall 2005-spring 2007)

Outcome: You complete 59 credits, including 15 weeks of practicum and student teaching. Provided that all coursework and exams are complete, participants earn their educational media license. Participants have 10 credits remaining toward a master's degree in curriculum and instruction.
