Leadership for Democracy in the Classroom

An Outreach Initiative for Diversity in Leadership

Program goals
This program was designed to support aspiring leaders of color through providing a realistic view of administrative roles. The Leadership in Democracy course will assist in the development of critical thinking ability and skills required to be a successful administrator through personalized instruction and providing a support network of peers and administrators. This course is applicable as a prerequisite for those seeking to continue in the Initial Administrator License program. If taken for credit this class applies towards the Initial Administrator License program prerequisite, EPFA 569.

Six-month format
Completion of the Leadership in Democracy course opens avenues to pursue further education in the Initial Administrator License program. The structure provides one meeting session per month in addition to two days in other school districts. In between sessions there are other options for assistance available, such as: communication with mentors, colleagues and instructors.

Student services
You may also choose to investigate other university services that are available to PSU students. If you are considering pursuing an advanced degree these services may be able assist you in planning your education as well as providing avenues to support your success.

Cohort class
Throughout the course you build strong relationships with fellow students; supportive relationships that assist you during the program and continue as you pursue leadership and administration positions. 

Integrated experience
With both formal and informal learning, you have the opportunity to apply theoretical topics and ideas, discussed in class, directly to your classroom experience.  In addition, you have time for in-depth discussions of real-life challenges with local educational leaders.  The once-a-month sessions, strong cohort, and university academic services provide the ongoing support you need to be successful. 

Career guidance
Throughout this program, you are able to discuss potential career paths with your instructor, resources in your district, contacts at professional associations, and Portland State University services.

District support
Strong school and district support for your participation is required and must be reflected in a nomination letter.

On­site advising/library
Onsite advising is available at all sites. Electronic access to the Portland State University library is also available.
