Autism Certificate of Completion
Educating the Child with AutismWith the number of school-age children being diagnosed with autism steadily on the rise, school district administrators have an urgent need to provide appropriate training for their faculty and staff who feel a need for more in-depth training. The Autism Certificate of Completion program at Portland State University was developed specifically to meet these urgent needs.
The Departments of Special Education and Continuing Education in the Graduate School of Education at Portland State University in collaboration with PSU's Autism Training and Research Center have designed this certificate program using research-based behavioral theory that includes a curriculum and techniques for teaching children with autism spectrum disorders as mandated by the No Child Left Behind Act.
The program is designed to teach students how to use a comprehensive set of evidence-based instructional strategies and a curriculum that is demonstrated to improve the learning outcomes of children with a range of disorders on the autistic spectrum. Students learn to analyze research to identify current trends and effective practices.
The Autism Certificate of Completion program consists of five 3-credit courses and four 1-credit fieldbased practicums, totaling 19 credits. Students can take the classes for graduate or undergraduate credit. Those who complete all 19 credits will earn a certificate of completion in the education of children with autism.
