Highlights
Five-term format
This program is designed for working teachers; courses are scheduled after 4pm. The licensure course work (38 credit hours) is completed in five consecutive terms. Beginning in winter 2009,
students take two courses a term. Four courses are
scheduled during the summer. Students who want to complete a master’s degree may
do so part-time by completing 12 additional credits in the master’s coursework in
special education.
Experienced faculty
Supervision, instruction, and program mentoring are offered by experienced Portland State University faculty
and seasoned professionals from the community who have demonstrated expertise in the field
of special education.
Cohort program
Increase your professional network and learn in a collaborative and supportive atmosphere
by participating with colleagues in an educational community throughout the entire curriculum.
Practical, mentored experience
Two supervised field experiences are completed within the age and grade ranges specified in
the desired authorization level. Depending on the type of licensure held, some students may
need to complete student teaching in special education
Expanded skills
At the end of the AddSped program, students will have earned an endorsement
in special education at the early childhood/elementary (age 3 – grade 8) or
middle/secondary (grade 5 – age 21) level.
