Highlights

Five-term format
This program is designed for working teachers; courses are scheduled after 4pm. The licensure course work (38 credit hours) is completed in five consecutive terms. Beginning in winter 2009, students take two courses a term. Four courses are scheduled during the summer. Students who want to complete a master’s degree may do so part-time by completing 12 additional credits in the master’s coursework in special education.

Experienced faculty
Supervision, instruction, and program mentoring are offered by experienced Portland State University faculty and seasoned professionals from the community who have demonstrated expertise in the field of special education.

Cohort program
Increase your professional network and learn in a collaborative and supportive atmosphere by participating with colleagues in an educational community throughout the entire curriculum.

Practical, mentored experience
Two supervised field experiences are completed within the age and grade ranges specified in the desired authorization level. Depending on the type of licensure held, some students may need to complete student teaching in special education

Expanded skills
At the end of the AddSped program, students will have earned an endorsement in special education at the early childhood/elementary (age 3 – grade 8) or middle/secondary (grade 5 – age 21) level.
